During the recent school holidays we were lucky to watch the 65th Bonspiel held on the Idaburn Dam in the Maniototo. Following days of hard frosts the Idaburn was frozen solid enough for the games to take place. Competitors travelled from all over New Zealand to take part and spirits were definitely high in the -4 celsius temperature.
Through the mist there was a colourful array of knitted jumpers and hats that my Nana sure would of been proud of and it was amazing to hear the sounds of all the curling stones gliding along the ice and to see such large amount of men on the end of a broom.
It sure was a moment that I felt truly blessed to witness such a spectacular winter wonderland, walk on a frozen lake and witness a Bonspiel that can only be held if temperatures drop low enough to freeze the Idaburn.
